What retaining walls in Sunshine Coast actually involves

Wall type is mostly a decision about height, appearance and lifespan. Timber sleeper is the cheapest and the shortest-lived; concrete sleeper is the common middle; sandstone costs most and lasts longest. Guide rates: timber sleeper around A$200 to A$450 per lineal metre, concrete sleeper A$250 to A$600, sandstone A$350 to A$700. Where a wall exceeds one metre in height, engineering is required and adds roughly A$500 to A$2,000 to the project.

Choosing a wall, and when engineering starts

On a house-raising project the retaining is usually not optional. If ground has been excavated under or beside the house, the cut edge has to be held, and that wall is structural rather than decorative. It should be designed alongside the excavation rather than added afterwards, because its footing and drainage interact with everything else happening under the floor.

Hinterland blocks around Maleny, Montville, Mapleton and Eudlo are steep enough that retaining is often the reason a build is possible at all, and the basalt-derived soils there behave differently from coastal sediment when saturated. On the flat coastal plain the driver is different: walls tend to be lower but drainage behind them matters more, because water leaves the plain slowly and a wall with poor drainage becomes a dam.

Retaining Walls in Sunshine Coast — common questions

When does a retaining wall need engineering?

Commonly once it exceeds a metre in height, which adds roughly A$500 to A$2,000. Walls retaining ground under or adjacent to a house structure warrant engineering regardless of height, because they are carrying more than soil.

Timber, concrete or sandstone?

Budget and lifespan. Timber sleeper is cheapest and shortest-lived, concrete sleeper is the usual middle, sandstone is the most expensive and the most durable. On a structural wall under a house, longevity is worth paying for.

Is drainage included?

It should be, and you should check the quote says so. On the coastal plain especially, a retaining wall without proper drainage behind it holds water as well as soil.
